Myth No.1. This is a scam.
Many people believe this to be a complete scam, or some kind of pyramid scheme. This is not the case. On the surface it does appear to be a Pyramid scheme, as you are the head of the pack, and you need to get x amount of referrals to register under you. If your referrals want to recieve a free gift as well, they will need to gain their own referrals. However, in a pyramid scheme the person at the top of the pile, gains from everybody that signs up below them, and money changes hands. The only person that benefits from the referrals, is the one person above them, and no money changes hands at all.
Here is a basic explanation of how all this works.
Firstly, you sign up to the freebie site. Once you have entered all the relevant details, which must be accurate, you need to pick and complete one of the offers. These range from a completely free 2 week trial of Lovefilm, to Coral sports betting site, where you need to wager £5 on a bet of your choice.
For each person that signs up to one of these offers, the advertising company, e.g. Lovefilm pays the freebie site a commision. This is called affiliate marketing.
Now you need to gain the required amount of referrals for your chosen gift. The higher the value of your gift, the more referrals are required.
Once you have all the required referrals, and they have completed their offer, the freebie site has been paid a decent sum of money by the advertisers, and it is out of this money that they purchase your gift, and what is left over is their profit.
Myth No.2. These freebie sites are just email harvesters and I will be spammed if I register
In all my time I have been participating in the freebie scene, I have never recieved any spam from any of the freebie networks. Also, if you are a member of Exceem, you can talk to and get to know the owners of these networks, as they all regularly particpate on the forum.
Myth No.3. You never really receive a free gift
I can speak from personal experience here, so far I have received just over £2000 worth of free gifts from the freebie networks. These include
£800 Bank transfer
Three Sony Playstation 3's
Nintendo Wii
Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite
Sony PSP
Nintendo Wii Fit
Two Wii Remotes
And I am currently working towards a bank transfer for my holiday planned for later this year!
